Public Consultation Closed – Draft Declared Mine Rehabilitation Plan:
Yallourn has powered Victoria for over a century. As we prepare for the closure of the power station and mine in mid 2028, EnergyAustralia is committed to ensuring the site is rehabilitated in a way that is safe, stable, and sustainable. The Declared Mine Rehabilitation Plan proposes to transform the former mine voids into an interconnected lake and is supported by technical studies including geology, ground water, climate, floods, water quality, flora, fauna, cultural heritage, seismic activity, environmental impact, community views, and stability risks. Formal community and stakeholder engagement and consultation for the Draft Declared Mine Rehabilitation Plan was undertaken over a 60-day period from 18 June to 18 August 2025.
We sincerely thank all community members and stakeholders who took the time to provide feedback. Your input is invaluable in shaping the future of the Yallourn mine site and ensuring the rehabilitation process reflects community values and priorities.

How we used your feedback
Our aim is to deliver a Declared Mine Rehabilitation Plan (DMRP) that reflects the values and aspirations of the Gippsland community while creating a safe, stable, and sustainable landform. We used your feedback to help shape the final rehabilitation approach and prepare the final DMRP. We also submitted a Consultation Engagement Summary Report that linked community and stakeholder feedback to changes and amendments, showing how your input contributed to the final plan. This report, along with all formal submissions, accompanied the final DMRP.
Next Steps
Following the completion of public consultation in relation to the Declared Mine Rehabilitation Plan (DMRP) for Yallourn, EnergyAustralia Yallourn Pty Ltd (EnergyAustralia) has updated the DMRP and submitted it to Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action (Resources Victoria) for approval by the Department Head in accordance with the requirements of the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Developments) Act 1990 (Vic). Consideration of the DMRP by the Department is ongoing, and so the DMRP remains subject to change.
