Continuing Yallourn's connection to energy generation
EnergyAustralia is proud to operate in the Latrobe Valley, with our Jeeralang Power Station at Hazelwood North providing important system stability and our Wooreen Energy Storage System under construction nearby. As part of repurposing the Yallourn site, we are investigating options for new energy storage and generation, including gas-fired turbines and large-scale batteries.
These sites, which could form an Energy Security Precinct, are an opportunity to use the existing grid connections, gas pipelines and skilled workforce already here to deliver new energy projects quickly and efficiently. Connecting into existing transmission infrastructure also helps reduce the cost of the transition.
A site at the heart of Victoria's energy future
The Yallourn site covers more than 5,500 hectares (55 square kilometres), similar in size to the Melbourne CBD and inner suburbs combined. We see a real opportunity to use some of this land to keep the site central to Victoria's energy future, and to provide economic opportunities for the Latrobe Valley long after the coal era ends.
By bringing together gas generation and large-scale battery storage, the Precinct would provide the reliable, on-demand power needed to support growing energy demand.
What we're investigating
The Precinct comprises four sites where new energy projects could be located. EnergyAustralia is currently investigating:
- Up to 300MW of gas-power generation near the existing Yallourn 'W' Power Station
- Up to 2.7GW of new utility-scale battery storage
- Land that could host new data centre capacity, supplied with energy from the site
These are early-stage proposals. Planning applications and community consultation are still to come, and we'll keep the community informed as plans develop.
